ATLANTIC BEACH - A city resident who's achieved supermodel fame has had another accolade heaped upon her this year.


Whitney Thompson has been selected as part of Microsoft Network's Lifestyle list of most influential woman in 2008. The 21-year-old Thompson was named in the list in an MSN Lifestyle report this month.


The latest honor for Thompson comes in a good year for the daughter of Atlantic Beach Assistant City Manager David Thompson. Whitney won the television reality show America's Next Top Model in its 10th season.


The 5-foot-10-inch Whitney Thompson is in New York, where she has signed two major modeling contracts with Cover Girl and Fashion Bug among others and she did so in the "plus-size" category, which is why MSN named her among the influential women's list. Others on the list include Michelle Obama, wife of President-elect Barack Obama, and U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y.


The MSN report on Thompson said she "could very well set the standard that the champagne-and-cigarettes-starved chic look is out and a healthy hourglass figure glow is in."


David Thompson said Friday he was beaming with pride at the honor for his daughter.


"Certainly, if you look at the other people on the list, it's quite a spectacular list. For her to even be on that same list with those people, it's quite an honor. Whitney is doing something that she loves doing. She represents herself and represents women well."


It's a relief that media and other women are willing to recognize Whitney for her unique contribution to modeling and establishing a positive image for young women, David Thompson said.


"She's showing people that you can have curves and you can be intelligent. You can be so much more than a stick figure in the fashion world. She's in an industry that's full of emaciated women and she's trying to make changes," he said.


In addition to her modeling work, Whitney is the national spokeswoman for Autism Awareness. David Thompson said his daughter is more than just a superficial face and it's an image that should be emulated by young women.


"I think one of the problems we have is that young women [and] this image that they think they have to live up to," said David Thompson. "They starve themselves to death. ... Bulimia and anorexia are tremendous problems today because they're trying to meet this image that tells girls, 'You're supposed to look like this.'


"To be proud of the fact that she's pretty would be pretty shallow. I'm proud of the fact that she's stayed who she is. She's not given into the Hollywood lifestyle and the drugs. Whitney remains who she is and she's very well-grounded and intelligent," David Thompson said.


While being named one of the most influential women in the past year is a huge honor for Whitney, David Thompson said his family keeps his daughter's work in perspective.


"She's not influencing countries or changing public policy. ... Her influence is primarily in that fashion industry. That's where she makes a difference," he said.

CRYSTAL Renn had a glamorous career as a globe-trotting model before deciding she'd had enough of the Size Zero lifestyle.

The American beauty began modelling as a teenager but after being encouraged to lose a third of her weight to win more work, she became concerned about her health.

Now 22, she's put on 70lbs and is a Size 16 - the UK average - and still looks stunning. With her glossy dark hair, clear skin and gorgeous curves, Crystal has everything a pin-up needs.

Despite being bigger than the standard model size, she's continued to be in demand from top designers and graced the pages of the world's leading style magazines.

Crystal, from Miami, has appeared in Vogue and Harper's Bazaar and worked with Jean-Paul Gaultier and Dolce & Gabbana.

Her campaign for the plus-size retailer Evans has brought her even more fans. As the face and body of the high street chain, she's helped to revitalise the brand which has carried more fashionable, trend-led designs over the last few years.

She says her greatest triumph is having a positive body image and revealed what her top tips for looking great are.

"To dress for your body type, accentuate your good points," she said. "I love to emphasise my curves by wearing a belt around my waist.

"Don't be scared of being a curvy girl. I also think you should dress to express yourself and have fun with your clothes.

"Don't try and follow trends too rigidly. Try to find your own style and have the confidence to carry it off."

Here she gives more advice on how women with a fuller figure can look fabulous for parties and offers some refreshing advice to anyone who is panicking about festive flab...

THE MOST FLATTERING STYLES
If you want to hide your arms, wear three-quarter length sleeves. If you like your legs, a higher hem-line will showcase that. If you do want to hide something, A-line works.

MY FAVOURITE PARTY OUTFIT
I like my bell-shaped shirt from Ivan Grundahl that never fails to make me feel and look good. Dramatic jewellery is a must and I love my metal Prada headband.

WHAT SHOULD CURVY GIRLS AVOID?
Everybody is different and what I might wear, someone else wouldn't. It's all about confidence and knowing your positives and playing them up.

WHAT'S BEST, COLOUR OR BLACK?
Black is always flattering but colour in the right places can look good. I like mostly black because it is a go-anywhere, do-anything colour.

TROUSERS, DRESSES OR SKIRTS?
I wear all of these but I believe dresses over tights to be the most flattering.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN AN OUTFIT?
What catches my eye would be an interesting shape. A gorgeous fabric would make me pick it up and the fit would make me buy it.

WHO DO YOU SHOP WITH?
I love to shop alone because I like to spend a lot of time searching for the right pieces. Although having lunch with a friend is good for a laugh. It makes it easy for me when I am travelling to stay in my room on rainy days and shop on www.evans.co.uk

WHAT SHOULD A CURVY GIRL WEAR THIS PARTY SEASON?
Some of the flowy, free-spirited cuts will be flattering, also because I like tights, I'm excited about the textures coming out. Bold accessories and bell shapes are some of my favourites. I can't leave the house without my Evans leather jacket.

IS ACCESSORIZING IMPORTANT?
It's the most important thing. A so-so outfit can become a great outfit with the right accessories.

WHAT ABOUT SHOES?
I love interesting shoes. A combat boot with something feminine can change the dimension of your outfit, or amazing heels with jeans can make you ready for evening.

WHAT LINGERIE DO YOU RECOMMEND?
I like to wear underwear that makes it look like I'm not wearing any.

ANY ADVICE FOR WOMEN WORRIED ABOUT SQUEEZING INTO THEIR PARTY OUTFIT?
Don't panic, Christmas comes once a year so eat up.

TLC is producing a new crime show that deals with a series of re-

A lot of people seem shocked by the bright orange hair Beth Ditto sported last week, but I am not the least bit surprised. The Gossip frontwoman has worn some pretty wild things, or nothing at all (like in her NME magazine cover last year). A self-proclaimed "fat, feminist lesbian," Ditto has broken fashion stereotypes and become an accidental hero for the full-figured simply by being her outrageous self.

Ditto landed a $400,000 deal earlier this year to design a line of clothes in the 14-32 size range for Evans, the plus-size retail giant. The announcement came after Ditto turned down an offer from Topshop, due to their limited sizes.

Apparently, everyone wants a piece of Ditto's brazen style, which ignores the fashion industry's ridiculous "rules" that bigger women shouldn't wear bright colors, patterns or basically anything interesting or fun.

Sales of XL men's clothes jump
Sales of plus-sized men's clothing have increased by 40 per cent over the last five years, according to new figures.

The growth compares to an increase of just 11 per cent across the menswear market as a whole, retail analyst Mintel said.

It coincides with spiralling levels of obesity in this country, with scientists now predicting that around a third of men are expected to be obese by 2013, up from a quarter in 2008. In total, 90 per cent of adults are expected to be overweight or obese by 2050.

The market for men's clothes sized XL or larger is now worth £1.7 billion, up from £1.2 billion in 2003.

Although the market for women's clothing sized 18 and above is currently worth twice that at £3.8 billion, it has only grown by 26 per cent over five years.

Katrin Magnussen, senior fashion analyst at Mintel, said: "Larger sized menswear is a real area of growth here in the UK. Obviously some men simply prefer wearing baggy clothes, but for a vast majority these ranges are their only option.

"These clothes have undoubtedly become more popular as a result of the rapidly rising levels of obesity among Britain's men. And an ageing population has also played its part as most people will find their waistbands expanding as they get older."

I have an agent, however, I feel as if I am not getting as many auditions as I should. I was wondering if you can offer some advice.

Dear Richey:

There are many reasons why you might not be getting calls from your agent. The first thing I would suggest is that you call your agent and arrange a time to talk with him/her. Say that you have gotten very few calls, and ask if there is anything you can do to get more work happening. Maybe your agent is out of photos (assuming your agent does not use jpg's exclusively). Maybe your shots are not selling you well and you need new head shots and or comp cards. Maybe there just is not much work for your category right now, or perhaps you are being submitted, but the clients are not requesting you. The most important thing is not to immediately blame your agent. Instead, communicate with your agent in an honest and trusting way. It will be extremely helpful to you in the short and long term.

Job Description

The Sr. Director of Inventory Management oversees the Merchandise
Planning, Store Planning and Allocation functions for the J. Jill
Retail stores. This position provides leadership and direction to the
teams to ensure all financial goals are met or exceeded along with
being in line with the company?s merchandise strategies. This role is
responsible for the overall merchandise plans along with monitoring
store level inventories thru the proper flow inventory into the
stores. The position oversees a multi functional team of 15 members.
The Sr. Director is responsible for the development of a high
performance, customer centric team. This position reports directly to
the Vice President of Inventory Management. The position partners
with Merchandising and Direct Inventory Control team to ensure that
in stock, inventory productivity and assortment productivity business
goals are met.

Responsibilities

? Oversees all merchandise planning, store planning and allocation
functions to achieve financial goals for the company.
? Partners with key cross function business partners in the strategic
development of the financial plans at a company, department, and
style level.
? Works with the senior leadership team on opportunities for
improving inventory asset utilization to drive sales and margin
? Represents planning and allocation during executive level strategy
and merchandise review sessions
? Supports business strategy by overseeing the overall financial plan
? Reviews and analyzes business and category performance.
? Participates in weekly and monthly in season business management
meetings, presenting analysis, calling out issues and action items
? Monitors and participates in the monthly and seasonal hindsighting
process
? Monitors inventory performance and directs appropriate mid-course
corrections to achieve forecasts
? Monitors the selection of appropriate allocation and replenishment
strategies
? Monitors and troubleshoots inventory levels at distribution center
and store level
? Maintains productive working relationships with stores, districts,
regions along with the Distribution Center team
? Represents business priorities with support organizations

We are auditioning models for the Fashion Show we will be having at
the Dallas Convention Center for the Texas Bridal Show, January 3rd &
4th, 2009. We are looking for both men and women to be in the fashion
show.

Female Models: adult models need to be at least 20 years of age and a
minimum height of 5' 7". Sizes: 4 - 8 and plus size 14W - 18W.
Male models: adult models need to be at least 20 years of age and a
minimum height of 5'10". Sizes: 32-34.

Female models will be modeling Bridal gowns on the days of the event.
Male models will be modeling tuxes on the days of the event.

Payment options will be discussed to those chosen for the show.
Please bring a headshot and a body shot with your stats and contact
information to the audition. You must be available to work for both
days - January 3rd & 4th. Be prepared to perform a practice walk so
we can see how you present yourself.

Clothing that is specially made for petite, plus-sized and tall customers is one of the most dynamic segments of today's apparel market, according to a new report from just-style. As such, it offers significant profit potential to manufacturers and marketers who can tailor their products to fit this outsize niche.

The outsize apparel market, which focuses on clothing for petite, plus-sized and tall customers, is rapidly growing in scale and sophistication.

The United States Department of Commerce calculates outsize apparel sales grew from less than 5% of total market share in 1980 to nearly 20% in 2008.

And according to just-style's 'Global market review of outsize clothing - forecasts to 2014 (2009 edition),' by 2014 the market for plus-sizes in the US is expected to reach US$73.3bn and will represent 28.8% of all US apparel sales.

This growth is being fuelled by several factors, the report says.

People are increasingly mobile on a global scale, creating a more diverse demographic to which retailers must customise their offers.

And changes in dietary and work habits significantly affect the proportions of petite, plus-size, and tall individuals in a country's population.

Globalisation also means companies are having to market their products to an increasingly global - and differently-shaped - audience in order to gain market share.

Collaborative growth
Growth in the outsize sector is also being driven by retailers and manufacturers working together to increase perceived value and customer satisfaction.

By combining body scan data, sophisticated customer and sales feedback techniques, and leading-edge manufacturing systems, they are able to create clothes that fit and enhance customers like never before.

Furthermore, these techniques have even brought back the era of personalised clothing in the guise of mass customisation.

Three main markets
The three main markets for outsize apparel are quite diverse, and all come under closer scrutiny in the report for their profit potential as well as the insight they offer as early indicators of market changes.

The shrinking percentage of women in the petite demographic cancelled out growing demand in units of petite apparel in markets worldwide from 2006 to 2008, a trend that is expected to continue. But revenues are likely to rise in the future alongside rising unit prices, higher quality and fit.

In contrast, the plus-sized apparel market is growing at a healthy clip, influenced by the growing indices of daily calorie intake and lower calorie consumption in most of the world. Further gains throughout the world are expected to 2014.

Tall customers represent a small but fast-growing segment of the total apparel market, increasing from around 5% in 2005 to approximately 7% worldwide in 2008 - a 40% increase in three years.

The tall market is the most under-represented of the outsized segments, and there are opportunities to profit from this global market gap.

The report describes these markets and their projected growth in detail, as well as trends in the clothing industry by region and company.

Market projections
Plus-size customers currently tend to buy fewer clothes, making them a currently underdeveloped apparel market.

The US plus-sized market, for example, is expected to reach US$73.3bn by 2014, and will represent 28.8% of all US apparel sales.

In western Europe, the outsize market is fuelling apparel market growth.

More than 40% of Western European women are obese, with an upward trend observed in Eastern Europe as well. Hence, the potential of the plus-size market to 2014 is considered to be high.

ARE you tall, gorgeous, well-proportioned and on the top side of size 12?

A second career in modelling could be waiting for you.

Melbourne has a shortage of plus-size models, according to specialist modelling agencies and the fashion companies who use them.

This is despite the fact one of Australia's most successful plus-size models, Abby Valdes, who is signed to Ford Models in New York, is a Melbourne girl.

Maria Muratore, general manager of Dream Diva said while there were lots of size-12 models around she considered a plus-size model to be a size 16.

"I've got the best one and she's on contract," Ms Muratore said. "I don't know whether they don't have confidence in Melbourne . . . I don't think there's less talent."

Ts 14 Plus marketing manager Melanie Schwarz said her label required models that would fit their sample clothing properly and had experience in front of the camera.

She said the label also couldn't keep using the same models.

"It's a difficult task, and that's not to say we don't appreciate the models we have, but we always want to keep our brand looking fresh," she said.

"It can be quite a challenge to get those planets aligned."

Chelsea Bonner, of Sydney based plus-size model agency Bella, said Melbourne fashion companies often flew models down from Sydney because they couldn't find the talent they required at home.

She said she was hoping to rectify the problem by holding an open casting call in St Kilda tomorrow.

"We really need to have a way to encourage Melbourne girls to get in contact with us," she said.

She said many of her models went on to forge good careers in the business.

"A lot of my girls end up working in New York or Germany, and end up making big dollars."

Darrianne Donnelly, of fellow plus-size agency BGM Models, said that while there were beautiful girls in Melbourne, finding girls to fit the model criteria was difficult.

Ms Bonner said plus-size models on her books needed to have a body mass index that was in the "healthy" range, a bust-hip-waist ratio that was in proportion, and be at least 172cm tall.

Bella's open casting is being held from 1pm-5pm tomorrow at the Cosmopolitan Hotel, St Kilda.

They are focusing on women aged 20-30.

New York – For students of fashion wondering what it takes in the current economic climate to survive, whether they're considering a career as a designer or in retail, the consensus amongst a handful of the fashion industry's competitive players at a fashion roundtable event hosted by the YMA Scholarship Fund and sponsored by DOW XLA on Tuesday, Dec. 2, is that it requires focus, creativity and communication with the customer. In other words, nothing has changed from a marketing perspective, but the financial variable means that brand building could happen more slowly.

Moderating the discussion the direction of fashion in the changing economy was Tim Gunn, chief creative office of Liz Claiborne, Inc., host of "Tim Gunn's Guide to Style" and well-known for his role on "Project Runway," who posed questions to panelists that included designer Zac Posen; Les Steiger, senior vice president of men's at Macy's Central; Alex Gonzalez, principal and creative director of AR New York; Mary Alice Stephenson, style expert and contributing fashion editor at Harper's Bazaar; Mindy Grossman, chief executive officer of HSN, Inc. and Josh Button, model and menswear fashion consultant.

Each panelist offered a mostly upbeat take on current shaky climate, viewing it instead as an opportunity for companies to re-focus the essentials of their brands.

"Define and redefine your look," said Posen, whose mentor, the late Hal Ruttenstein, had also advised him. "Create your own look, and know who you are and know who the customer is." But, he added, "There's no formula."

"Communicate your truth to a wide audience," said Alex Gonzalez, who founded his own advertising agency ,"but don't speak to the lowest common denominator to survive. Hold to the truth."

Mindy Grossman of HSN, Inc., said that brands that can tell a story and connect on a deeper level with their customers will survive.

"We offer great stories and great storytelling, and we understand what our customer is thinking and feeling," she said of her popular shopping channel. "There's never any bad news on HSN," she joked. "If you're tired of watching CNN, watch HSN!"

Also, she added, the products you sell have to be unique or special, something that "you can't get anywhere else, but is accessible."

Les Steiger, who said that at Macy's they add 20 new brands each year to their stable, said that it's harder to launch a full collection initially, so "find a niche, whether it's shoes or it's t-shirts," he said.

Mary Alice Stephenson pointed to the internet as a tool enabling brands to have more of an emotional connect with their audiences - now, even luxury brands selling $100,000 diamonds have original content on the Web.

"Fashion has to be inspirational," she said. "Luxury brands have to communicate what buying their product makes you feel on the inside and how good it makes you feel."

Still, the rules for luxury brands have changed, the panelists agreed, but that doesn't mean designers or companies shouldn't take risks.

"Everyone I know is cutting back in some way," said Steiger. "We're competing for that discretionary dollar. But in fashion, we need continued innovation."

our Nordstrom Product Group (NPG) team! The Senior Product Developer
is responsible for accurately interpreting and translating the
Designers intent to a set of product specifications and ultimately
into an NPG quality sample garment. The Senior Product Developer
works closely with Design, Brand and Sourcing to develop products
that are reproducible, meet Brand fit and construction standards and
meet wholesale/retail goals. Work in conjunction with Brand Team,
Sourcing and QA to ensure compliance to NPG standards. Collaborate
with Brand, Pattern Engineering and Factory to establish and set
blocks and any new body silhouettes. Work with minimum supervision.
Support NPG initiatives. The following aspects of duties within the
Bridge Department are listed below:

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Design sensibility and aptitude to interpret Designer vision; new
trends and or shapes using draping and patternmaking abilities;
making or requesting mockups; and or in conjunction with internal
Pattern Engineering and or thru Factory request

Interpret Designer sketch and basic information to an accurate and
reproducible spec package

Develop accurate product specifications within calendar deadlines

Evaluate samples and communicate changes to internal and external
partners

Coordinate with Pattern Engineering on block or pattern development
or mock-ups

Understanding of the brand, customer, principles, philosophies and
values upon which the brand is built

Demonstrated ability to adapt to change and be self directed

Participate in review of suppliers´ performance, for development,
quality, execution and lead-time, twice annually

Participate in cross-functional teams regarding process and systems

Lead Technical design team discussions of brand process, procedures,
and special projects

Travel may be required

Train and mentor other members of the Technical Design Team

REQUIRED SKILLS/ QUALIFICATIONS:

directed.

· Ensure that all stores maintain merchandise presentation
according to Visual Merchandising standards and current floor sets.

· Understand and communicate Planning and Distribution and
customer merchandise needs recognize when the stores' merchandise
assortment meets, or fails to meet those needs.

· Maintain an awareness of inventory content in all assigned
stores.

· Balance merchandise within area/city or out of district
based on direction from District Sales Manager or Regional Sales
Director. Move merchandise if necessary.

· Recommend changes to store profiles when appropriate.
Submit proposed revisions to District Sales Manager or Regional Sales
Director.

Store Operations:

· Visit stores within each area of supervision; conduct
quarterly shrink audits and store visit reviews to monitor consistent
achievement of brand standards and business results.

· Complete all required or requested paperwork accurately,
legibly and on a timely basis.

· Communicate the status of local competition and local
business conditions as required. Keep District Sales Manager
informed of any significant changes.

· Ensure that payroll is maintained within approved budgets
for area/city stores.

· Monitor all other expenses for which managers are
responsible within budgetary guidelines.

Training:

· Ensure all management staff has successfully completed the
Store Management Training Program, the Management Skills Training
Programs and Associate Training Programs.

· Work closely with Training Managers to ensure new Store
Managers are appropriately trained.

· Communicate changes in store policies and procedures to
managers within district and ensure that changes are implemented
correctly. Personally follow all policies and procedures and sets a
positive example for staff.

· Ensure that Training audit of each store in area/city is
done once per season or as directed and prior to a manager leaving
the Company. Communicate results and give appropriate feedback and
coaching.

Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by management.



Requirements
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

· High school diploma or equivalent. College preferred but
not required.

· Six to seven years retail experience, with a minimum of
four years of management experience.

· Strong written and verbal communication skills.

· Strong problem solving skills and the ability to make sound
decisions.

· Must present a professional appearance and personal grooming.

Physical Requirements

· Ability to reach, push, pull, stand, squat for up to 4
hours or longer as necessary.

· Ability to use common tools.

A NATIONAL "body image" code will require media outlets to portray women of all shapes and sizes.
And magazines would have to tell readers if photos of women have been digitally altered to make them fit a particular physical type.

Glamorising extremely underweight models and celebrities would also be opposed under the Federal Government code.

Yesterday Youth Minister Kate Ellis announced the conduct protocols to help fight what she called "the devastating effects of eating disorders and body image issues".

The code would also put a 16-year age limit on models used in adult fashion shows, magazine shoots and TV programs.

It would be voluntary, but most media groups were expected to sign on after deliberations of a national advisory group of industry representatives and health advisers finished next year.

"The advisory group will consider matters such as the disclosure of altered and enhanced images, the representation of a diversity of body shapes, fair placement or diet, exercise and cosmetic surgery advertising," Ms Ellis said.

It would also be aimed at "avoiding the glamorisation of severely underweight models or celebrities".

Ms Ellis criticised her older male parliamentary colleagues for not giving Australia's body image issue the attention it deserved.

"As a rule, Parliaments reflect the upbringing and world outlook of its members," she said. "With the make-up of our Parliaments, should we then be surprised that issues important to youth have been under-represented?"

Ms Ellis said issues such as equal pay, childcare and work-and-family balance once were considered extreme issues but are now mainstream.

She said that in the same way body image problems had been a "silent epidemic" which had to be acknowledged. Young women lost self-esteem and confidence, felt ashamed of their bodies and some descended into dangerous eating disorders.

"The consequences of poor body image affect real people in powerful ways, leaving families, mates, schools and our community to feel the pain and pick up the pieces," Ms Ellis said.

Yesterday a parliamentary committee considered another aspect of care for young Australian bodies - advertising of junk food.

At issue is a bid by the Greens to legislate to limit advertising for fastfoods on TV, while the industry wants self-regulation.

The Australian Beverages Council told the committee in Canberra "there is no proof there is a cause and effect" between ads and obesity in the young.

The food industry wants to introduce a voluntary code banning commercials for unhealthy snacks which are directed at children aged under 12 during children's programs.

However, the Australian Psychological Society said children under eight couldn't distinguish between advertisments and programs.

Strip off those trousers and shorten your hemlines. Legs are in fashion.


But they're not totally exposed. Omaha women are emphasizing their sexy calves with stirrup tights and legwarmers, bold-colored nylons, patterned leggings and knee-highs this season.

And they're not just wearing them out to the clubs. You can see the latest looks at work, school and church.

Opaque tights in rainbow colors have been prevalent on high-fashion runways from Chanel to Chloé. Cosmo Girl's October issue featured models in hot-pink mini skirts and knee-high stockings.

Wal-Mart has jazzed up its legwear collection. Leopard, argyle and houndstooth prints sell for $5 at local stores. At Omaha malls, Charlotte Russe, Wet Seal and DSW windows display lace stirrup leggings and knit legwarmers.

Local boutiques, such as Runway and the Garment District, stock a lot of nylon. And Target's racks feature 40 styles of stripes and bright colors.

The more you play up your legs, the better.

Omahan Angela Poor stacks brightly colored tights with neutral outfits. She'll wear her chocolate brown suit with aqua-colored legwear. The blue color pops from underneath her crop pants.

"Instead of using earrings, I use tights," said Poor, 35. "It's a great accessory."

Tights are relatively inexpensive and can transform your image immediately. You also can experiment — some favor lace or houndstooth prints.

Others layer knee socks, thigh-high nylons or legwarmers over tights, said Kara Birkenstock, spokeswoman for DSW. Leggings look nice when they're paired with dresses and pencil skirts.

"It's a versatile look," she said.

The sudden attention to women's legs has much to do with the super high heels, tall boots, dresses and pencil skirts women are wearing today, said


Sally Kay, chief executive officer of the Hosiery Association, a trade group based in North Carolina.

"We've got legs that are better than ever," she said.

Sales of tights and other funky legwear are booming.

Annual U.S. hosiery sales have grown from 3 billion to 3.2 billion since this time last year, Kay said, citing statistics from the NPD Group, a New York-based marketing and analysis company. Hosiery jumped in two areas: tights and knee-highs. Tights increased from 168 million to 255 million and knee-highs went from 265 million to 306 million.

Who's buying them? Mostly young girls and plus-size women.

"Younger consumers are very fashion-conscious," Kay said. "They truly do have a great relationship with their legwear."

Teens and twenty-somethings emulate what they see in magazines, music videos, blogs and popular television shows. White tights are a must for the teen drama queens in "Gossip Girls" and cutie-pie actress Ashley Tisdale frequently wears them.

Five years ago, plus-size shoppers couldn't find much variety in hosiery. Now they're able to choose from different colors, patterns and textures to blend with their outfits, Kay said.

Omahan Colette Murray owns more than 20 different pairs of legwear.

Some have chunky stripes. Some go just above the knee and others are funky printed tights.

Hairstylist Murray, 23, notes what celebrities like Rihanna and Sarah Jessica Parker wear and replicates it.

"Several of my customers like to come in to see what I have on," she said.

Kelli Smith of the Garment District, 16909 Lakeside Hills Plaza, said that when you consider colors, patterns and textures, women now have nearly limitless options to pair tights with outfits.

She suggested, for example, wearing a burnt orange-colored knit dress with ivory tights and tall brown boots.

The Garment District sells opaque tights in scarlet, charcoal and chocolate colors for $20 to $35.

Women should invest in a premium brand of tights, Smith said.

"They're more durable, thicker, shape to your leg and don't get runs or holes as easily," she said.

Poor, however, will stick with less-expensive options.

Women's Plus Size Clothing Retailer Renegotiating Leases, Too

The country's largest retailer of plus-size women's apparel, Charming Shoppes, Inc (Nasdaq: CHRS) recently hired A.T. Kearney as its consultant in matters relating to restructuring and cost reduction. The retailer announced plans to close as many as 100 stores during fiscal year 2010, which begins February 2009. This is on top of the 150 stores the company announced it would close earlier this year -- those are scheduled to be complete by January 31, 2009. In addition, Charming Shoppes said it has been successful so far this year in "achieving significant occupancy cost reductions through renegotiations of leases with its landlords" and said it intends to continue renegotiating leases.

The company did not provide a breakdown of stores closing among its brands regarding this latest round. The 150 closures it announced earlier this year involved the closing of 100 Fashion Bug stores. Fashion Bug stores are typically located in Class B community shopping centers and average 8,800 square feet. Petite Sophisticate stores average 2,700 square feet, Catherine's Plus stores average 4,200 square feet and Lane Bryant stores average 5,900 square feet.

Store Manager


The role of the Store Manager is to manage the operations and to
maximize sales and profitability within the store. The ideal
candidate would possess a minimum of 5-7 years experience within a
specialty retail store environment, possess a love if fashion and
visual merchandising, and have a proven track record of getting
things done in a fast paced environment.


Co-Store Manager


This position is responsible for maximizing the sales and
profitability of the store, in the absence of the Store Manager. On a
daily basis, this individual will assist the Store Manager in
executing the company's direction and ensuring that store personnel
and merchandise are correctly assigned. The successful candidate
would possess a minimum of 5-7 years experience within a specialty
retail store environment, possess a love if fashion and visual
merchandising, have a proven track record of getting things done in a
fast paced environment.

SOURCING MANAGER
The Sourcing Manager is responsible for ensuring that buying agents
and suppliers consistently achieve quality, price, meet delivery
dates, compliance and customer service expectations.


RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop sourcing strategies by category/auctions with Director of
Sourcing.
Work with Product Managers to meet sourcing objectives in fabric,
quality, pricing and delivery of execution of line plan.
Work with Technical Design team and Product Managers on apparel
specification development and send to overseas offices for sourcing.
Work w/ overseas offices to negotiate price to meet merchant
requirements.
Oversee placement, processing and follow-up for all orders.
Act as primary point of contact for domestic and overseas offices.
Review reorders to make sure brand needs are met.
· Travel to research new factories and fabrics for product
development.


REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree and at least 5 years experience in sourcing fabrics
and/or product production management.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills a must.
Demonstrated strong technical skills, computer abilities and overall
business acumen.
Specific knowledge of fabric, color, patterns, costing and quality of
consumer goods a must.
Knowledge of global sourcing strategies and changes is preferred.
Ability to travel.
· Strong oral and written communication skills; Must have advanced
excel skills; proficiency in MS Word a must
